John C. Ryland practices in the areas of family law, personal injury, criminal defense, civil litigation, medical malpractice defense, and commercial litigation. He was admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee in 1994, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 2000.
A native of Dyersburg, Tennessee, Mr. Ryland received a B.A. from the University of Tennessee in 1990. He earned a J.D. with honors from the University of Memphis in 1994. While in law school, Mr. Ryland was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in Evidence, Criminal Law, Debtor-Creditor, Business Organizations II and the West Award in Secured Transactions, Business Organizations II. In addition, he was a member of the University of Memphis Law Review in 1992-1994.
A fellow of the Memphis Bar Foundation, Mr. Ryland holds memberships in the Memphis Bar Association; the Tennessee Bar Association; the American Bar Association; the Leo Bearman, Sr. American Inn of Court, 1999-2001; and the International Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy, 2001. Other accolades include recognition from Super Lawyers, Mid-South, 2015-2022; the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys, Top 10 Award for Excellence in Family Law, 2015-2018; National Advocates, Top 100 Lawyers, 2017; and the AV Highest Rating in both Legal Ability and Ethical Standards from Martindale-Hubbell, 2016-2020.
